Boy Self
how can you teach a 12 year old boy self-discipline?

He is a big boy. He just has no drive to do things on their own. He becomes F's in school because of not turning tasks and late work, and I do not think he cares. How can we teach him self-discipline and to have to drive to to do so on your own? He has been in baseball and did not like it cause something to lose the fun and becomes somewhat similar work, he does not like it anymore. He was in football and likes it. We have grounded him from everything. His grades improved .. are off the grounding as his grades go down again.

Maybe conversations with him about his future, ask him what he would do in the future, what kind of career he will, he will want a family, friends, etc. ..? If he answers yes to any these then ask him how he plans to get to this point. Have set some goals, they can be a little goal to begin with, involving one of his grades up. Tell him to just try it and see how it makes him feel that to set a goal, work hard to achieve it and then succeed. Talk to him about his future and life and how he has a chance to live his life, and there are many paths he can take that will lead him down different roads, and will determine what kind of life he lives. Try to explain to him that it is up to him to make good choices so he can have a good life. I talk about these things with my boys all the time when they were younger. Children do not just think this stuff on their own, they believe in the here and now. It is up to you to get him out wrapped around his future and what he wants to do with it. I think the first step, as I said, there he is small goals and try hard to achieve them. Maybe it's cleaning his room every other day own without being told. This is what self-discipline means. This means that you make good choices on their own without knowing, because you want to do the right thing and you will feel good about yourself.

BOY, A BOY, A
$17.96

Bright futures are undercut by dark pasts in BOY A, a quiet, ruminative tale about a violent act committed by a man in his tormented youth, and his haunting inability to find a way to have a peaceful adulthood years later. Fresh out of a 14-year prison sentence, 24-year-old Jack (Andrew Garfield) arrives in Manchester looking for a new start. He has a new name, a new job, and a carefully sealed criminal record, but an entire boyhood spent behind bars has left him permanently looking over his shoulder. Guided by his fatherly caseworker, Terry (Peter Mullan), Jack attempts to forge meaningful ties with a local girl and a chatty co-worker, but what happiness he finds is challenged when his true identity seeps (and then floods) through the cracks of his new façade. Directed with claustrophobic flair by John Crowley (INTERMISSION), BOY A unfolds in tight hallways and on narrow roads; for Jack, even in freedom, every room's a prison. As the story of Jack's new life moves forward, sharply lit flashbacks continually offer new details of his childhood crime. The backward glances work as both a compelling narrative technique and a glimpse into Jack's conscience (and the viewer's); the harsh reminder of his former self seem to play endlessly in his mind, impossible to reconcile with the gentle, introspective adult he longs to become.

From the outset, U2 went for the big message -- every song on their debut album Boy sounds huge, with oceans of processed guitars cascading around Bono's impassioned wail. It was an inspired combination of large, stadium-rock beats and post-punk textures. Without the Edge's echoed, ringing guitar, U2 would have sounded like a traditional hard rock band, since the rhythm section and Bono treat each song as an anthem. Of course, that's the charm of Boy: all of its emotions are on the surface, delivered with optimistic, youthful self-belief, yet the unusual, distinctive guitar textures give it an unexpected tension that makes it an exhilarating debut. The songs may occasionally show some weakness -- the driving "I Will Follow," the dark "An Cat Dubh," and the shimmering "The Ocean" stand out among the sonic textures -- yet the band's musical and lyrical vision keep Boy compelling until the finish. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music GuidePerformers: Bono - Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals; Adam Clayton - Bass, Guitar (Bass); The Edge - Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals; Larry Mullen, Jr. - Drums

1904. "Fairly considering all that I know now, what training of body and mind should I choose if I were allowed to become a boy again, and if I wanted to prevent the most serious mistakes as easily as possible and with as little attention to them as possible, so as to avoid morbidness or crankiness or priggishness?" To answer that question is the object of Miles' book. Partial Contents: self-control and self-expression, a personal opinion about easier ways; comparisons and contrasts; common fallacies; search for causes of mistakes; some effects; what has succeeded at schools and elsewhere; an early mastery of many alphabets; the habit of patience in view of results; compelling ambitions and responsibilities; a better map of life; wanted: more candor, less prudery; sacred individuality; why we should be hopeful; power of the body and surroundings over the mind; better food; air and breathing; games, athletics and self defense, good intentions not sufficient; power of the mind over the body; a boy's interests and attractions; hero worship; prayer; imagination; privacy and publicity.

After Sir Robert Morton, a respected lawyer, agrees to represent the boy, the case becomes a national spectacle and threatens to erode the family bond. But even as the legal circus engulfs the Winslow's lives, self-discovery and blossoming romance round out this period masterpiece filled with shimmering hope, wit and humanity.

Growing up in the Missouri Ozarks in the 60s and 70s, Wade Rouse was always a bit of an outsider. While some of his roughneck peers wore Wrangler jeans and had stylish crew cuts, Wade feathered his golden hair and sported a handmade leatherwork belt bearing his unfortunate childhood nickname, Wee-Pooh. Taunted by his classmates, Wade finds comfort in his offbeat but lovable family, but when a tragic motorcycle accident ends his brother’s life, Wade buries his sexuality along with his brother, vowing to be the son he believes his family wants. America’s Boy is Wade Rouse’s bittersweet and utterly moving tale of self-denial and self-discovery, and a tender tribute to the eccentric family that carried him through it all. Wade’s battle with himself— and the long road back to self-acceptance—forms the heart of America’s Boy , a joyful and courageous memoir about a boy learning to embrace his own true nature.

Barrio Boy is the remarkable story of one boy's journey from a Mexican village so small its main street didn't have a name, to the barrio of Sacramento, California, bustling and thriving in the early decades of the twentieth century. Galarza's saga begins in Jalcocotán, a mountain village just south of where the Gulf of California joins the Pacific. When the turmoil precipitated by the Mexican Revolution begins to escalate, the family leaves their tiny village in search of safety and work in a nearby city. Subsequent moves introduce the boy to the growing turbulence of the Revolution and the uncertainties of city life. He experiences firsthand the difficulties in finding work in a strife-torn nation, securing an education, and keeping a close-knit family intact. When his family finally settles in Sacramento, young Ernesto encounters new experiences and influences that will forever shape his outlook and broaden his horizons. With vivid imagery and a rare gift for re-creating a child's sense of time and place, Galarza gives an account of the early experiences of his extraordinary life that will continue to delight readers for decades to come. "Ernesto Galarza has written a long and vivid memoir of his childhood. The only disappointment in the book is that it does not go on for another couple of volumes to recount its author's rare career in redefining America." ?The New York Review of Books "With its suspense, humor, and occasional sadness, Barrio Boy is splendid reading." ?American Anthropologist "[A] personal document where historical self-explanation, philosophical self-analysis, and poetic self-expression merge to tell with irony and humor a social story: an individual's participation in one of the grandest migrations of modern times?the influx of Mexicans into the American Southwest." ?Diacritics

Transfer Boy: Perspectives on Asperger Syndrome explores what it is like to be an adolescent with Asperger Syndrome, through interviews with Teodor, a 'psychologically unusual' thirteen-year-old. In this detailed case study, Vuletic and Ferrari combine an autobiographical account with perspectives from other family members and people who know Teodor well, while simultaneously integrating psychiatric and psychological research on autism. The authors evaluate the merits and pitfalls of different interpretations of autism and address the broad psychological issues related to Asperger Syndrome - intelligence, social skills, memory, the transitional period from childhood to adolescence. The study includes results and interpretations of standard measures of self-concept, an IQ test and a psychiatric exam, contributing to the hitherto under-researched area of autistic self-knowledge.

Richard Wright grew up in the woods of Mississippi amid poverty, hunger, fear, and hatred. He lied, stole, and raged at those around him; at six he was a "drunkard," hanging about in taverns. Surly, brutal, cold, suspicious, and self-pitying, he was surrounded on one side by whites who were either indifferent to him, pitying, or cruel, and on the other by blacks who resented anyone trying to rise above the common lot. Black Boy is Richard Wright's powerful account of his journey from innocence to experience in the Jim Crow South. It is at once an unashamed confession and a profound indictment—a poignant and disturbing record of social injustice and human suffering.
