Rare And Exotic Garden Perennials For Landscape Planting
The term 'perennial' simply means that the plant is returning after a series of severe freezes, to grow again next year. Trees are cold hardy tested perennials by nature, some trees are evergreens and do not go to sleep, but only slow during different seasons, and other shade trees enter dormancy and shed leaves. Tree growth shade trees may stop completely in extremely cold weather, but in spring, will wave with buds that open to flower and leaf out.
Great difficulties arise in allocating a plant, "several years", primarily because the primary determining factor, temperature range varies from year to year, and every century extreme cold can erase certain plant populations that have survived in areas until decades or even centuries. A perennial may be a survivor, so a "multi year" for a specific growing region, so suddenly may become extinct in this growing field. USDA has constructed a zone map showing an average of temperatures, as the place in your country. This map is a nursery tool used to predict whether a multiannual will live (cold hardy) in your area.
Agave is a diverse genus of over 200 species of rosette, spear-like, leafed evergreen perennials. Agave typically grows as low shrub-like plants in dry or well drained soils of the southern United States from New Jersey down to Florida, and thence west to California. Many Agave species such as Agave americana or Agave tequilana, have sharp recurved, protective teeth running along both sides of the blade of its semi-curved, lance-shaped leaves, with a sharp needle-tip lance at the end. The color variations of Agave plants range from shades of green to silver gray, bluish-green, top yellow or white stripes, as is the case with Agave americana 'Media-picta'. The bloom of mother Agave plants are a beautiful array of pendulent bell shaped, creamy-white flowers, soaring high above the mother plant on a flower stalk which can reach 20 feet or more in some agave species. The bloom during mother Agave plant is during the summer and stalk is refreshing to see, But this event does the cycle of life ends for mother Agave and begins again for her Agave offspring. Yucca is a genus of evergreen plants, with about 40 species growing in dry, desert-like areas. But it is a widespread misconception, because members of the Yucca family members can be found growing in 30 of the states in America, from New Jersey down to Florida and west to California. Yucca can be grown as small shrubs or yucca trees, up to 30 meters high, depending on yucca species. Yucca has lance-shaped leaves growing in a rosette pattern on a woody stem On or trunk-like frame. Yucca plants can vary dramatically in color from shades of green to white or yellow stripes, to blue-green hues, as with Yucca rostrata, a jewel for any garden. Most yucca plants are stiff and sharp tip, like the Spanish Bayonet (Yucca aloifolia), while some yucca has Flexable soft leaves, such as Golden Garland Yucca (Yucca flaccida). The flower blooms of yucca grow in summer, and develop into a beautiful, creamy white pendulum of bell-shaped flowers that tower eight feet above the mother plant. Yucca is very flexible and are among the oldest living trees in the world. The Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia), Yucca filimentosa (Bear Grass or Adam's Needle) is among the most cold hardy and widely cultivated varieties. The strong, stringy filament (fiber), which runs a course from the needle tip into the margin of the leaf, was used by Native Americans to make clothing and possibly to the treating war wounds. The roots of Yucca were also used to make soap. The primary use for yucca plants in today's landscapes are for their decorative beauty as we find in Yucca flaccida 'Golden Sword', in terracotta pots or in ground landscape plantings. Some people use Yucca aloifolia 'Spanish Bayonet', Yucca treculeana 'Spanish Dagger ", or even Yucca brevifolia' Joshua Tree ', as a security fence for their beautiful and exotically bazaar, stiff leaves, hence the nickname "Burlars' Nightmare". The Long Island Motor Parkway $14.66 A forerunner of the modern highway system, the Long Island Motor Parkway was constructed during the advent of the automobile and at a pivotal time in American history. Following a spectator death during the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race, the concept for a privately owned speedway on Long Island was developed by William K. Vanderbilt Jr. and his business associates. It would be the first highway built exclusively for the automobile. Vanderbilt”s dream was to build a safe, smooth, police-free road without speed limits where he could conduct his beloved automobile races without spectators running onto the course. Features such as the use of reinforced concrete, bridges to eliminate grade crossings, banked curves, guardrails, and landscaping were all pioneered for the parkway. Reflecting its poor profitability and the availability of free state-built public parkways, the historic 48-mile Long Island Motor Parkway closed on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938. |

The Crying Rocks $3.48 About Joelle’s life before she was found — brought in from the railway depot, a scrawny five-year-old child — there isn’t a lot known for sure. "And don’t ask me! I can’t remember anything," she snaps at anyone who pries, including the weird kid named Carlos who sits in the back row in Spanish class. But when Carlos, collector of arrowheads and Native American lore, tells her she looks like a girl in an old painting of Rhode Island’s Narragansett Indians, Joelle can’t help sneaking a look. She’s surprised by a flicker of recognition. It’s Carlos who leads her through the forest to the ancient Crying Rocks, where howls on windy days are thought to be the spirit voices of children long ago, flung from the boulders to early death. The terrible story draws Joelle into the downdraft of her own memory, to a window, a shadowy mother, a freight train escape from Chicago. It also leads her toward the history of a lost American people, and the discovery of a rare kind of courage that runs deep in her family. |

On the Rocks $15.98 This is the third album that the Wailing Souls cut with the Roots Radics, following Firehouse Rock and Inchpinchers. The first two were overseen by Junjo Lawes, On the Rocks the Souls produced themselves, and the result is an absolute delight. Stylistically the differences are slight, Lawes who currently ruled the sound systems preferred a heavier sound with the emphasis on Style Scott’s slamming beats, the Souls are more egalitarian. This is particularly evident on “The Riddim of Life” and the righteously reasoned “What Is Your Meaning” where Errol “Flabba” Holt’s throbbing bassline is the focus, and the allegorical “Ishen Tree” where saxophonist Dean Fraser and the brass section leads the parade. That latter number has plenty of kid appeal, as does “Don’t Burn Baby,” which sensibly suggest that if it’s too hot in the kitchen, get out. “Stop Red Eye” is just as bouncy, and even more infectious, and Winston “Pipe” Matthew has a grand time rebuking the greedy shark within. The whole studio, meanwhile, revels in the title track, a sweet sing-along, awash in the Souls’ most sparkling harmonies, and further fired by Fraser’s smoking solos. The brass section are again showcased on the upbeat “The Gun,” whose perky backing is counterpointed by the group’s message, as they bemoan and condemn the proliferation of small arms on the island. Equally heartfelt is the devotional “Jah Is Watching You,” deep roots swept along by the group’s phenomenal three part harmonies. The sufferer’s themed “Saga Trouble” is just as good, fueled by Holt’s bubbling basslines, Style Scott’s pendulum beats, and a dense arrangement that harkens back to the group’s Channel One days. Which leaves “Sticky Stay” the odd song out. This recent hit was cut not with the Radics, but with Sly & Robbie, and is rocksteady slow and just as melodious, but rocksteady the experimental duo’s way, as Robbie pays tribute to Jackie Mittoo while Sly fills the grooves with percussion and metronomic beats. If not quite hitting the heights of their Lawes’ sets, Rocks comes close to scaling them, and remains a superb record. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music GuidePerformers: Dean Fraser – Horn; David Madden – Horn |
